Executive Summary of RDIP 2050: A Strategic Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Plastics Industry

The e-book containing the Executive Summary of the Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Plastics Industry (RDIP 2050) is now available. This strategic document summarizes the main results, scenarios, and recommendations to support the climate transition of the plastics sector in Portugal.

This e-book presents, in a clear and accessible way, the main frameworks, data, and conclusions of the Roadmap, including:

  • The European and National context of climate targets, aligned with the Paris Agreement, the European Green Deal, the PNEC 2030, and the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050;
  • The economic and environmental characterization of the plastics sector, which comprises more than 1,000 companies, around 27,000 jobs, and a turnover of approximately €7 billion;
  • The historical evolution of greenhouse gas emissions, which have fallen by around 29% compared to 1990, highlighting a decoupling between economic growth and emissions;
  • The decarbonization scenarios up to 2050, including a “Business as Usual” scenario and a Carbon Neutrality scenario, supported by vectors such as energy efficiency, electrification, renewable fuels, circular economy, and carbon capture.

The Executive Summary also highlights a set of practical recommendations for companies, from calculating and managing emissions (scopes 1, 2, and 3) to setting science-based targets, integrating climate action into corporate strategy, and strengthening collaboration and transparency throughout the value chain.

📘 The e-book is available in digital format, allowing quick access to the essential content of the RDIP and serving as a reference tool for companies, decision-makers, technicians, and other stakeholders in the sector.
